Background
Goom Landscapes is a family business and has been operating for four decades. The named company was established in 1981 by Chris Goom, and continues today to be family-owned, run by Chris’ son Tim, daughter Sarah and daughter-in-law Rachel. There are around 30 employees in the core business, which provides three services: landscape design, project management, and construction. These three services come together to provide customers a seamless landscaping experience. Goom Landscapes is known for its high-end residential work and commercial landscaping but is equally at home with garden makeovers as it is with large scale landscaping projects.
The directors also own The Little Big Tree Company, that operates independently and also supplies to the landscaping business.
Oxford Edge does the accounting for both businesses, and Oxford Edge Director Graeme Rhodes sits on the advisory board. Tim, Rachel and Sarah want to be in the business long-term, and wanted strategic advice from outside of Goom Landscapes to help it succeed and grow.
What our client says
Tim Goom met Graeme when he had some landscaping done by Goom at his own place. After some discussion, Oxford Edge took over handling Goom’s accounting, and got involved in the business’ governance.
As a family business, there have been some internal challenges that Graeme has helped with, lending an objective, external eye and giving strategic advice when needed.
What we did
Goom Landscapes has its own internal administration team who handle everyday accounts up to a management level, then Oxford Edge handles management accounting and get everything in order for annual accounts and tax.
As a board member, Graeme provides ongoing governance and strategic advice, including assistance identifying costs and opportunities in the years following the Canterbury earthquakes and the Covid-19 pandemic. Graeme is in constant touch with Tim, Rachel and Sarah, who regularly run business decisions by him and his team.
